012502 - 645pm - Getting Closer!

OK, tomorrow morning will be here soon, so I want to put up some reminders for tomorrow. First, there will be ABOUT 75 chairs. What that means is, last year we had 76 max, I still could have crammed someone somewhere, but we have to be realistic when it comes to how many we can actually cram in. mmmkay? But, if your arriveing really really really late, you might ought to pack your card table, for just in case. You never know. Could be the biggest DFWLanParty ever :) Second, remeber that all chairs are first come, first serve. If your driving in from out of town, try to arrive at no later than noon. Doors will open at 11am for early birds (which I suspect, there will be many. Last, Brent, who is our Regional Sales Rep from Bawls, will be joining us, and he will be working his magic to make our party better in his own special way!

So, I'll look forward to seeing all you guys tomorrow! RAWK!! (oh yeah, and watch your inboxes for the newsletter, with directions and what to/not-to bring)

Just a quick pre-LAN update... its looking like we are going to be moving to 5v5 format on the CS tourney. So, bring your teammates accordingly. And keep your ears open, as there is going to be an announcement at the LAN concerning future DFWLanParty CS Tournaments.

DFWLanParty was made in party possible by...

11251 - 325am - 2001 is a Wrap!

The 2001 DFWLanParty Gaming Season has officially come to a close!! And WOW this was a great year! The year 2001 saw several new games come out that have been real hits at the LANs, and some network upgrades that have proven to be quite beneficial, but most of all, we have all met lots of new faces that we are glad to call friends. And if it wasn't for all you friends, DFWLanParty wouldn't exist, so thanks to all you guys!

Unfortunately, Crue was not able to be with us at the November DFWLanParty, as he and the wife and kidlet were vacationing in Las Vegas. While this is great for him... guess what it means for us? It means that Sharaz forgot to take care of camera arrangements! DOH! *slaps self*

So as most of you know, the December DFWLanParty was canceled (back in October, actually). I think.. no wait... I KNOW we all need a breather from all the hardcore gaming we've done over the past year, so a month off is due. I for one, am going out of town on that weekend. So, lets all plan to have nice relaxed Christmas' with all the people we care about, and lets plan to start it back up on January 26th, 2002!

Last, even tho we DFWLanParty won't meet in December, don't forget we can all hang out together in IRC! We now have 2 channels on 2 networks. They are: irc.enterthegame.com, #dfwlp; and irc.gamesnet.net, #dfwlp. The Gamesnet channel is newer, and not many people idle there, and the ETG one usually has about 20 people in there who can answer questions you might have, or be the butt of your next joke!

OK, thats it for now, we'll see ya in 2002!!
--Sharaz Jek

Thanks for another great year you guys!

110101 - 300pm - Super DFWLanParty II - Tournament Edition

Regisration is open for the next DFWLanParty! And guess what..?? This party shall forever be remembered as...

"The Thanks-Mas LAN"

This will be called this for a several special reasons. 1) It will be on Thanksgiving weekend. 2) This will be in lieu of a December LAN, since we all need a break, and I'll be out of town. 3) This LAN will have an entry fee of $0.
--Sharaz Jek

shut up jimix! go to class! quit skipping!

103101 - 1030pm - New Addition

I want to take a brief moment to anounce a new addition to the DFWLanParty Staff! LAYGO has been a loyal attendee for many months now, and with all the time and effort he has put into making the tournaments at DFWLanParty as best as they can be, it just seemed natrual to add him to the ranks! Congrats LAYGO! Now, Stand, and be recognized, SIR LAYGO! Oops, I mean... Now, join #dfwlp, and be Op'ed, LAYGO!
--Sharaz Jek

shut up jimix! go to class! quit skipping!

102801 - 330am - D-Day +1

A most excellent LAN Party indeed! I think we saw the greatest diversity of games that we have seen in a long time! We had many great rounds of the Wolfenstein Test, the resurgance of the old favorite Quake 2 (Action! Quake2 and Nighthunters), lots of RA3, DM, and FFA from Q3, but one of the most intersting and fun games we played was a new demo of Aliens vs. Predator 2! The Alien was totaly awesome! Oh yeah.. and lots of CS!

Much too all your surprise, there are pics up from August and September are up, and hmm, even Octobers too! Aren't you proud of me?? (Sharaz officially off butt again)

Finally, dont forget we now have IRC channels on two networks, irc.enterthegame.com and irc.gamesnet.net. Both are #dfwlp. Come join us!
--Sharaz Jek

shut up jimix! go to class! quit skipping!

102501 - 930am - More File Updates

A new version of OSP came out this week, bringing us to v99w. 1.0 should be out soon! You can get is from the Orangesmoothie website, or from our local files section.
--Sharaz Jek

cha cha cha lets have a lan party cha cha cha!!

102201 - 1200pm - I Smell CTF!!

The new Threewave CTF mod is out, and WOW is it awesome! Inclusions and remakes of excellent previous Q3CTF maps, and remakes of several Q2 classics, this CTF mod is in my opinion, by far, the best there is! Check it out at their website! I've added the files in .exe for windows and .zip for linux to the files section.
--Sharaz Jek

Jimix! Go do your homeowkr! Quit surfing thenet!

092701 - 200pm - New Quake 3 Arena 1.30 Out!

090301 - 930pm - Registration Open for Sept DFWLP

Registration for the September DFWLanParty will open tonight at 9pm! Woo Hoo! If you have any questions, an excellent resource if the DFWLanParty IRC Channel. Many of the regulars and Staff hang out there, and can answer any question you might have. Just point your favorite IRC client to irc.enterthegame.com #dfwlp.

WHAT??? YOU DON'T HAVE AN IRC CLIENT??? No problem! Just click right here!
--Sharaz Jek

jimix, leave me alone! farter!

082601 - 1230pm - DFWLanVirus

WE had our first serious virus threat yesterday at DFWLanParty. If anyone was infected and was not running any antivirus software, look on this page to find a free removal tool and intructions on how to clean your system.

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.funlove.4099.html

I cant stress enough how important it is for each player to make sure they have current antivirus software on their pc, both to prevent bringing an infection into the lan party, and to keep your computer from being infected while at a lan party.
--Sharaz Jek

dangit i use notepad for this stuff!

082201 - 1020pm - Sharaz Officially Off Butt

Could it be??? Could it be that Sharaz has actually done something productive that will make the DFWLanParty community full of joy that they get to see all the wonderful pics that our very own Crue slaved over a hot camera all day to take? Yes, folks, Sharaz is up and awake, and actually, as I type out this text (written in emacs on a Linux workstation JIMIX! gah!) the pics page for July'01 is already uploading. By the time anyone reads this, it should actually already be working. Click here and try?!

There have been many requests for some of the newer custom Counter Strike maps, and today I put them in the rotations on the general play servers. These new maps will be available on Zeus in the ../games/half-life/counterstrike/maps directory. The tourney will still run on the familiar maps that come with the download.

Quake 3 Arena Servers will be running version 1.29h, which will also be available on Zeus. Mods running on DLP Servers will be OSP v99-v3, and RA3 will be yer basic v1.5.

This month, Laygo will be giving a test run of the "grilled-hamburger-distibution-system" that we have been talking about for a while. Since we just trying it out, there will not be beef for everyone, and it will be first come, first served. There will still also be the standard pizza run I will make for everyone who is not first :) Depending on intrest, we will see how this goes for future DFWLanParties.

Last, everyone who is registered be on the lookout in your inbox for a DFWLanParty newsletter! Frag you guys this weekend!

072601 - 940pm - New Quake 3 Arena Patch

Id Software released a new Quake 3 Arena patch today, version 1.29g. It seems to be running pretty nice, so we will be using it tomorrow. I'll have it available on Zeus for anyone who does not want to download the 20-something meg file.
--Sharaz Jek

yay new patch the day before the lan!!

072601 - 940pm - 2 Days Out!!

Two days away!! Can you just TASTE IT?? lol I know I can!! This week has been pretty lean on the gaming for me, as I've been making final preparations on the new cabling system for the party. All you fraggers will no longer have to bring your own Cat5 cable anymore ("...hey Sharaz... you have a cable I can borrow for today??"), which I know will be a MAJOR relief to some of you (and you know who you are... EACH MONTH!! HAHA!!). Well, that's all for now, I know I'm sooo ready to LAN it up this weekend!!

And Oh yeah!! Don't forget, you can hang out with us in IRC chat by pointing your favorite client @ irc.enterthegame.com #dfwlp. You can always find someone there to answer any question you may have!
--Sharaz Jek

MUST LAN!!! MUST LAN!!!

Welp, DNS is now fully functional agian for the site, and that means that so is FTP. This also means, that I can now upload the pics from the June DFWLanParty! Yay!! Check them out!!

070101 - 1100pm - Congratulations to Dominous!

One of our DFWLanParty regulars has taken First Place the the CPL 4 Year Anniversary Doom II Event!! Congradulations to Jason, aka Dominous! Great job man! I guess DFWLanParty can proudly say we are now home to 2 world champion gamers! Succubus, who has been attending for several months now, has also just recently won a CPL Tourney abroad in Europe. When I tell people that the competition is fierce at DFWLanParty... "no, I'm not joking." :)

OSP has also released version .99v of their Q3 mod, so grab it from their downloads page. Head over to the OSP Downloads page, and download it NOW! "osp-quake3-0.99v.zip" is what you need, its the second file from the top. Updates are mainly to make sure it continues to run fine with the 1.29 patch.

The Requirements page (linked from the Info Page) has been updated. Please take a look at it, note the changes in yellow.
--Sharaz Jek

pics up soon, quit yer whinin!!

061701 - 710am - New Quake 3 Patch

Id Software released a new patch for Quake 3 tonight. It's available all over (even here, when I put the link up).

Its pretty possible that the new 1.29 patch will break mods like RA3 and OSP Tourney (what we use to play CTF). Ill be testing it tomorrow to see what happens. If it does, then we will be playing 1.27 for one more month until the mod authors have a chance to update their code (if necessary)
--Sharaz Jek

yay patches 5 days before the lan!!!

061701 - 710am - New Local Boys

There is a new LAN party about to kick off in the near future! www.fragwire.com is taking registrations for its July LAN party, and for those of you into longevity, this one is for you! Its going to be 3 days long!! It will be the weekend before the July DFWLanParty.

Tonight is the GhettoLanParty, so anyone who is the mood for some LANnage, head over to www.ghettolanparty.com (whoot they finally got a real URL!). Signup and Directions and other info is all listed on their page. I'll be heading out there to have fun, so I hope to see many of you DFWLP'ers there!

052701 - 415am - D-Day +1!!!

Well, 415am, and another lan party has come and gone. I just want to shout out to all the participants who drug their rigs out to the red oak community center, and thank everyone for making DFWLanParty all that it has become. Without all you players, DFWLP would obvioulsy not exist! Great LAN everyone!

Oh, and there is something very weird to be seen here.
--Sharaz Jek

don't yell at me about pics!! lol

052101 - 840pm - I'm Not Dead!!!

There have been many rumors about my whereabouts for the past few weeks, and I hear some people are saying that I was in a terrible car accident. Well, that's not even close to the truth, but I could tell you know that a long hospital stay was involved, and I've pretty much recovered 100%. That said, here are all the pics that you have all been waiting so long for!!!

I made the road trip up to OKCLanParty this last weekend, and I'll definitely say I had a great time! Up there they have a fondness for CTF... there were some vicious games of instagib CTF going on, talk about hard to make a flag cap!! Whoo hoo!! Anyway, for those of you who have not experienced the LAN that spawned DFWLanParty, you can check out their site here, and sign up for next months when their registration opens up soon!

The next DFWLanParty will be here this weekend!! Whoo hoo!!! I know I'm looking forward to seeing you all there again this month! Last month we had a HUGE variety of games to play, and this month it looks like there will be many small Classic Gaming tourneys to take part in. there are a few forum threads that mention this, head on over there to pick up the info. CS will of course make its normal return to our evening's agenda. Frag ya this weekend!!

Lastly, don't forget to click on our sponsors links! Our newest sponsor, www.mygamewear.com has shirts and hats that nearly everyone can wear and enjoy, pertaining to almost every type of game! Also, thanks to HardOCP/RatPadz, Fishys DVD Store, Cole3d.com, and PhoenixCIS, you guys definitely make DFWLanParty all that much better!! j00 guys RAWK!!!
--Sharaz Jek

No I wasnt really in the hospital. j00 lose!!

In Remberance of a Friend Departed

Doug didn't let the fact that he worked at a games company doing something that many people dream about doing go to his head. A lot of the people that I have been in contact with in the industry have been arrogant jerks while doug always had the time to send an email or help me out in some way. I know it sounds corny, but he is one of those people that gives you hope for the human race with his humor and genuine good heart.

I've found that people tend to fear change, and say they hate it instead.

051001 - 1200am - Minor Site Maintenance

Well, the attendees link is fixed (um, someone try it in Netscape 4.x and 6.x and tell me what it does), and now Ii obliviously need to workout the rotating sponsors deal, which is now gratuitously broken. I love Javascript, and so do you. :)
--Sharaz Jek

I've found that people tend to fear change, and say they hate it instead.

050601 - 840pm - May Registration Opens

Registration for the May 2001 DFWLanParty has opened as of now. So go sign yo sef up!!

Contests for this month will be the tried and true 4v4 CS tourney, round robin format, and a new one for us this month will be our first Case Mod Contest, sponsored by PhoenixCIS. There will be a very nice prize that is definatly worth modding your case for. More details soon (as in, the rules :)

And the pics from April will be up shortly, so stop asking me in IRC! (oh yeah, DFWLanParty has our own IRC channel, so point your IRC client at irc.enterthegame.com and join us in #dfwlp!)
--Sharaz Jek

So far, no one has said anything about these messages. :)

041801 - 130pm - Still Counting the Days

Man, I'm already counting the days until the next lan party! April has brought us an extra week between our normal 4 week interval, and I'm definitely already feeling withdrawal!

Just a few announcements about the next LAN party:
Quake 3 event - will be Rocket Arena 3. Likely 4v4 in a round robin format. RA3 has been asked for for a long time, and we will finally give it a go and see what happens! With the relatively small learning curve, RA3 is easy for everyone to play, as knowing where all the guns, ammo, and armor is never the issue.
Counter Strike tourney will move up to 4 man teams this month.

--Sharaz Jek

I've found that people tend to fear change, and say they hate it instead.

040801 - 210am - Counting the Days

I've been getting a lot of script messages letting me know about invalid email addresses from the registration script. Don't forget... if you neglect to put in a valid email address in your registration, then the SQL server also neglects to keep your registration in the database. No biggie, if your registration was refused over an invalidity such as wrong email, please feel free to register again.

On another note, I rebuilt one of the Linux servers yesterday, and I must say, this is the best running Linux server I've ever built. Zoom.
--Sharaz Jek

Linux ownz me and you too!

032701 - 150pm - CS Tourney Results Posted, Registration Opens

As per request, I've posted round by round results of the "DFW 3 Man Rumble" CS Tourney that went down at the March DFWLanParty. They can be viewed here.

Code phase of the day... for those who understand... :)
"The Pictures are not up yet. Repeat... The Pictures are not up yet..."

Lastly, regisration is now open for the April 2001 DFWLanParty. When you signup, REMEMBER to put in a valid email address, or your registration will be automatially removed, and you will have to register again. There will be 70 available chairs, first come, first served, as always. Hope to frag you all there!! (um, see you all.. :)

i did not invent hidden text. the pictures really are up! schmo!

032501 - 1155pm - Another Successful LAN is Complete!

*Keanu Reeves voice*
WHOA...
That was an Awesome LAN Party!!

Round Robin has definaly turned out to be my favorite tourney style. It was so awesome to see how every round meant so much to every team. It was awesome to see the lead change hands several times as the tourney progressed thru the evening. And when it came down to the last match, there was still no clear winner until after all the scored for the evening were added up. A definate nail biter! :P In the end, The Regulators stole the victory for themselves with just a 3 round lead over IFOR.

The Quake 3 "Who OWNZ DFW?" Tourney was also filled with some fierce competition. I honestly had no good prediction who would come to the top of the losers bracket, and when the final match took place for the championship title, Lost-Cause came out on top as the victor, losing only 1 match the entire day (to the winner of the losers braket, who defeated LC in the first match, but LC pulled out the win on the second match).

I should have all the pictures up within a day or 2 (my Diablo2 habit permitting...).

Last, I want to thank [H]ardOCP.com and RatPadz for the great mousing surfaces, Cole3d.com for the heatsink/cpu cooler, MyGameWear.com for the wearables, and PhoenixCIS.com for wealth of hardware that fuels our desires to tweak a little more out of pur pcs... thanks for making DFWLanParty that much better!
--Sharaz Jek

031401 - 1130am - Registration Opens (Finally!)

OK, we are getting settled in at our new webhost, so all the kinks of moving over should iron out smoothly soon. If you are reading this, you are seeing data from the new host, as the old host has a different copy of this page. This also means that if you are reading this, you are also now able to sign up for the March DFWLanParty. Because of the lateness of the opening of the registration, there will be no "at the door fee" of $15, and all entrance fees will be the standard $10, whether you register or not. Please note that at the time of this posting, the .dll file that sends the confirmation email out is not registered on the server, but it will still show your registration on the Attendees page.

I know this will disappoint everyone, but there are no pictures of the February DFWLanParty. Sorry. So, if you want to see the Feb. pics, click here, or go to the previous page.

012401 - 700pm - CTF Tourney Info

This month will feature a new event for DFWLanParty. I'm excited to announce that this month we will have what we call "The DFW IRON MAN!", which will consist of up to 4 teams competing in 2 hour marathons of CTF. The winners get bought dinner, by none other than Sharaz Jek himself! (don't that sound enticing?? :)

Here is how the teams will work: if there are less than 20 participants, there will be 2 teams, (1) 2 hour round. If there are 20 or more participants, we will divide up into equal amounts, and there will be 4 teams, (2) 2 hour rounds.

I'll update this post again soon, and I'll list the maps we will be playing, as well if there are any other last minute twists on this one.

I'm stoked that we are finally having a CTF event at DFWLP, as its great fun for people of all skill levels, and something a large number of us can all take part in at once!
-Sharaz Jek

012301 - 900am - Counter-Strike Tourney Info

Here is a cut/paste of the info that LAYGO sent me on the "offical unofficial" CS Tourney that will be running under his supervision:

The tournament will consist of 8 or 16 teams. A minimum of 8 teams or maximum of 16 teams with the top seeded clans getting byes for the 1st round. It will be random seeding for all teams, so who gets the byes will be by virtue of the luck. If there are more than 16 teams, the 1st 16 signed up will participate.

The maps will consist of ALL DEFUSION MAPS (DE_DUST/DE_CBBLE/ETC)! Absolutely no other map type will be played. With a maximum of 16 teams, there will only be a need for 4 maps maximum, 3 minimum. So, maps in order of round being played are as follows:
- Round #1: DE_DUST
- Round #2: DE_CBBLE
- Round #3: DE_TRAIN
- Round #4: DE_AZTEC (if needed - depends on team count)

The rules for each & every game are as follows:
- NO OVERALL TIME LIMIT (mp_timelimit 0)
- Each game will consist of best of 14rounds, 7rnds as CT, 7rnds as T (mp_maxrounds 14)
- 3min round limit (mp_roundtime 3)
- Friendly Fire/Grenade will be on with NO punishment for a TK (mp_friendlyfire 1 & mp_friendly_grenade_damage 1 & mp_tkpunish 0)
- 30 second Bomb Time(mp_c4timer 30)
- Force Chase Cam will be on in locked mode (no Free Look - mp_forcechasecam 1)
- "Ghosting" or "Dead Talking" is not permitted & if used, results in immediate disqualification of the entire team. Put simply: "DEAD MEN DON'T TALK"
- Only team captains are permitted to talk using "messagemode1" or "say" (mm1), all other communication should be via "messagemode2"

Other issues:
- If a player's PC crashes during the match, it *WILL NOT* stop. Play will continue & either a registered sub can enter, or the player connects as soon as possible.
- Voice Communication Programs are allowed. Again, if you're dead, you're expected to be quiet.
- Any known, or unknown cheats/hacks/glitches/exploitations/attacks on other players/servers will result in immediate disqualification & removal from the lan party & banned for eternity!
- Any rulings or conflict resolutions will be handled via a panel of Lan Party Staff members & confidents.

Any questions/comments should be directed to: laygo@dethkorps.com

Thank you . . . please drive thru.

So there ya have it. Questions can be emailed to the address above, or you can meet him or other DFWLanParty Staff members and players in #dfwlp on irc.enterthegame.com:6667.

12.17.2k - 12:25am - Misc. Ramblings

Call me off my rocker, but I'm pretty seriously considering going back to Windows 2000 Server for the DFWLanParty servers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy with Linux. And there is definatly the stigma of using something other than M$, but I'm finding that the power I have available in my servers is not put to good use when I use an O/S that can only effectivly be a GAME SERVER on a single ethernet card or address. And I'm less likely to lose the server logs (thru my own fault of course) in Windows. :) Oh well, im still thinking.

I plan to have the pics from the November DFWLanParty up by the end of this week (but as always, no promises :)

12.3.2k - 11:00pm - New Demo

American McGee's Alice. All I can is "wow" and "stop what ever it is you are doing and go download it right now" from this link.
--Sharaz Jek

11.30.2k - 11:35am - Thats a Wrap!

Against my normal discipline, I have decided to get off my duff before the first week has ended, and actually make a post to the site before my normal time. :)

MAN what an awesome LAN Party that was! We totally killed our attendance record with 68 people! Um, yeah, the room only holds 55. How did we do it you ask? I'll let you all in on the secret, that it had to do with breaking the law of physics that says "2 particles of matter cannot occupy the same space...". Funny part is, last month we had 55 people, and kept tripping the breakers.. and with 68 that didn't seem to happen. Yet another Law of physics broken, I'm sure.

The Tourneys that we held were also a success! The 'Who OWNS DFW?' Q3 1v1 Tourney was won by *69|Katsu, and the 'DFW 3 Man Rumble' was taken by 'Deth Korp' (LAYGO, Phoenix, and Upgrader). Both of the final matches were well worth seeing! c4.LoSt-CaUsE was unseated as our reigning champion, but only by one match. He ascended to the top of the losers bracket (put there by none other than Katsu himself) and took Katsu down in the first of the 2 matches that had to be played. But having lost the coin toss for the first match, and the first round of the final 2 that it would take to win for LC, Katsu invited LoSt-CaUsE into one of his best maps, and sealed his victory.

Our first Counter-Strike tourney went well too, the only hang-ups being that the the config I copied right off the CPL web page is written wrong, and that teams had a hard time getting their matches started on time. In the end, it came down to Deth Korp vs. Dash (dloob, Inf, and Morph). Dash lost both rounds by only 1 win. That was definitely an exciting match to watch!

Thanks to our sponsors, for providing Prizes for the tourneys! Bawls supplied cases of their high octane Guarana soda to the 1v1 tourney winners, Seaworx.com put up a battery backup unit that Katsu took home for his efforts, and PhoenixCIS sponsored Golden Orb Coolers for the winners of the CS tourney!

Anyway, the December DFWLanParty has been canceled since I'm going out of town. Phoenix is considering putting together an alternate LAN party in lieu of DFWLP, so you can check the thread here and see any info that comes out on that.

11.24.2k - 10:15am - Tomorrow is D-Day

Tomorrow is the day! WHOO HOO!!! Yet another fine day of frag filled pleasure. :)

Very IMPORTANT that everyone keeps in mind that all seats are first come first serve. Get your CS Tourney Team together and get your butts over here Pronto! And if you are participating in the Q3 Tourney, you better also get here fast and get your spot. Keep in mind that some people are coming for general gaming only, and that those spots could prevent you from getting a seat if you are not punctual enough. Last month at the official time the doors opened, there was ALREADY 35 people there. Don't be seatless!

The "DFW 3 Man Rumble" Counter-Strike Tourney will start at 2pm. The "Who OWNZ DFW?" Q3 1v1 Tourney will start around 4. It will be difficult for someone to participate in both, and since this is only a 1 day event, the schedules will be pretty tight. The CS Tourney will run on my new PC, a dual P3-800 with 512 megs of ram, and the Q3 tourney will be running on my old box, which is a dual p3-560 with 360 megs of ram. I don't wanna hear no complainin'. hehe :)

I sent out a news letter yesterday, and I'll prolly shoot out another one this afternoon. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! FRAG BABY! FRAG!!

11.16.2k - 5:00pm - General Meaningless and Useless News

We are about a week or so out from the next LAN party, and it looks like we are definitely 'go' on the 'Who OWNZ DFW?' Q3 1v1 Tourney, since the CPL Qualifier has been moved to a different day. I'm sure they were afraid they were going to lose all their players to DFWLP anyway... :P

And speaking of the 1v1 tourney, SeaWorx.com has anteed up the prize this month... and its something no LAN gamer should be without! The winner this month will take home a nice APC Battery Backup unit for their PC. So get your practice in!

This weekend several of us are taking a road trip to participate in OKCLanParty. If you can make it up, check their site! Hopefully one (or a group, depending on the nature of their tourney) of us will be bringing home their prize. >:) One of their admins has actually signed up for the Nov. DFWLP too... so hopefully his truck will not catch on fire the day before and once again prevnt him from making the trip (please note this was caused by helping a friend in need, so never ever do that).

11.7.2k - 7:30pm - Regisration for November DFWLP to Open Tonight at 9:00pm

Tonight is the night that Registration will open for the November DFWLanParty! Woot!! This month will feature not 1 but TWO tournaments for your prize winning pleasure (not to mention you get to have your name plastered over to the left!!). The 'Who OWNZ DFW?" Q3 1v1 Tournament will make a return, along with our new feature, the "DFW 3 Man Rumble" Counter-Strike Tournament. Teams will be "pick your own", so get your teams together and get ready to RUMBLE!!

As last month (and we saw that it was quite successful!) ALL seats at the November DFWLP will be First Come First Serve. You can ICQ me at 8132754 or come to our IRC channel #dfwlp on irc.enterthegame.com.

That is all.

10.29.2k - 5:50pm - Do You Want to Save your Changes? (yes)

Yesterday's DFWLanParty was yet another attendance record setting LAN Party. We had 55 people and every chair was filled. Congratulations to all the DFWLanParty players who have made this the biggest DFWLanParty we've ever had! WOOT!!

The 2v2 "Terrible 2's" Quake 3 TDM Tourney was an overall success. In the end, it came down to the team of c4.Lost-CaUsE & [KYA]Rage as our winners! Congratulations guys! They each took home a case of Bawls to drink and Golden Orb CPU coolers for their processors from PhoenixCIS as prizes!

Man we had a lot of new faces! I'm sure at least 50% of you were first timers at DFWLanParty! It was great to meet you all... I tried to meet as many of you as I could, but I know many of you got past me! We had a great showing of DFW old timers too... Clan {C4} was there in force and [K4H] boys came out,

This post was originally really long, but I guess subconsciously I didn't really want to save the changes, because I clicked "no". Then I yelled and screamed for a few seconds. I'll try and remember the rest of all the goodness and post it back up soon. :)

Oh yeah.. there was something in there about "don't forget to come hang out with us in #dfwlp on ETG's IRC network". :)

10.27.2k - 10:30pm - Small Directions Update - Construction Detour

Quick reminder for those of you traveling from north to DFWLanParty tomorrow.... The traffic will prolly once again be total crap comming south. Your best bet will be to head west toward Ft.Worth on I20 as you are heading south (I20 will be the last freeway interchange before you get to the DFWLanParty) and get off at the Hampton Exit (second exit after you get on I20). Turn left on hampton, and take it south about 15 minutes till you get to about Bear Creek or Ovilla Rd (either of those will be fine) then turn left and it will take you to 35e again. Once you get to 35e turn right and you will be only an exit or 2 from Red Oak Road where we are.

See you guys tomorrow!!! RAWK!!!!
--Sharaz Jek

10.26.2k - 10:30pm - 2 Days Till D-Day

Well we are 2 days out till the Next DFWLanParty!! RAWK!!! This one is going to be awesome!! There will be a Q3 2v2 TeamDM tourney (random draw teams) and lots and lots of high caliber fast paced Counter-Strike action! With tourney prizes from Bawls and PCIS, and other door prizes to take home for some lucky gamers, DFWLanParty is gonna be the place to be on Saturday Oct. 28th!

I sent out a newsletter this evening, so everyone who has signed up to play will get it. Some of you will get it twice (oops!! sowwy!!) I'm not sure if ill blame the clicker on my mouse of the clicker button on the browser, but I'm sure its not my fault! (hehe anyone belive me? :)
--Sharaz Jek

10.25.2k - 5:35pm - State of the Patch

The new Half-Life 1.1.0.4 patch came out today, and after I played it a few hours on the net this afternoon, I've decided its stable and that the DFWLP servers will be running it.

I got mine at FilePlanet... Full Version and Update Version are both there. A full list of mirrors for the file can be found at PlanetHalfLife. As Always the patches will be available on the file server at the lan party to save your the 18-50 meg download, as I know many of you are banwidth-challenged. :)

The Q3 Team DM Tourney will be running the old trusty 1.17 patch. And since lots of people have been asking, and i obviously forgot to mention this on the front page (but its been gove over many times in the FORUM... get in there and participate!!) the 2 on 2 tourney will be random draw teams. That give anyone a shot at the title this month, and the ooh ahh prize. The winners will each recieve a case of Bawls and an Orb Cooler (for what ever processor they have) for their system from Phoenix Computer and Internet Services! OH YEAH!!

Everyone also remember that all seats this month are first come first serve. Doors open at 11am, LAN starts at 12. we will run all day long and wind down at 12-1am. So no matter what # you are ont he signup list, you have a shot at a seat. Get there, and if you want it, TAKE IT!.
--Sharaz Jek

10.22.2k - 11:40pm - New IRC Channel

Well, even though our last one was a failure, we are once again attempting to make a presence on IRC. We have a new channel on irc.enterthegame.com, at #dfwlp. I'm pretty much always there, and if I'm away, you can post questions you may have there, and I'll get them.

Lots of people are asking about the prizes in the "Terrible 2's 2v2 TDM Tourney" at the next DFWLP, and the prizes are being sponsored by BAWLS and PCIS, and they are putting up 2 cases of Bawls Guarana, and an Orb Cooler for what ever CPU the winner happens to have. And of course will as always have the standard run of other door prizes to win too, so come on out and win stuff! :)

That is all.
--Sharaz Jek

10.22.2k - 1:00pm - 15 Minutes of Fame for DLP

OMG!!! [H]ardOCP.com finally put up that video we did who knows how long ago! (I think it was Augustish?) Long live RatPadz!!! Check it out!!
--Sharaz Jek

10.21.2k - 2:40am - Random Ramblings

Well guys, we are about a week out from the next DFWLanParty! I'm ready to RUMBLE!! How about YOU?? :) This month we will feature a 2vs2 Team Death Match Tourney, and we have a new sponsor on board who is coughing up a prize I know I would not mind winning. :)

Today I finally took a look at a very cool feature of Windows 2000 Server, the Distributed File System. The basic premise is that you can make shared folders and files available to users under one logical share root. That way a user does not have to remember what server and/or share to drill down to to find the resource needed, they just know that the DFS root is located on \\Server. The really cool part is, not only can an admin combine all shares from a server into one central folder, you can also combine an entire networks resources into a single dfs root too. \\Server1 and \\Server2 both have 10 share directories, but they are all available under \\Server1\dfs, and the user sees them all under one folder. This paragraph falls under the "Sharaz is prolly the only one who cares about this" category. At any rate, all file shares on the file server can now be reached at \\jove\dfs. From there, if you can open it, you can use it.

10.11.2k - 6:00am - Page Update

The hardware page has been updated to reflect the new permenant changes to the operating systems of the game servers.
--Sharaz Jek

010.3.2k - 11:00pm - VRGN IP Address Info

I know this will only reach a very small portion of the playerbase, but IP address of the VRGN quake server has changed. The New IP is:

208.206.231.245:27960 -=|VRGN|1v1|=-
208.206.231.245:27961 -=|VRGN|RA3|=-
208.206.231.245:27962 (private clan server, password necessary)
208.206.231.245:27920 -=|VRGN|AQ2-PiRo's Playground|=-

Unfortuatly the timeing of this switch was so that I was not able to update all the MOTD's ahead of time to let the players know that the IP change was comming up, but oh well. You got over it, right? :P

010.3.2k - 11:00pm - Pics and Stats Up

WOW!!! Now that's Service with a Smile!! The Pics are done, and if any of you haven't noticed, the stats were up a few days ago. GO CHECK EM OUT!!

Registration seems to be going pretty smoothly so far. I want everyone to remember several things:
1. All seats will be first come first serve this month. Doors open at 11am.
2. If all seats are open, then why should you register? Well, if you do, it only costs $10 to get in. Its $15 otherwise. And if you don't register, you wont get the newsletters and you wont know whats going on.
3. If you are Definatly comming, then definatly register! If you are prolly not comming, then definatly DON'T register! lol Easy enough?

Well, that about covers it for now, email me if you have any questions about the seating next month!
--Sharaz Jek

010.1.2k - 9:30pm - Registration for Oct DFWLanParty Opens Tomorrow

Well, Registration will open for the October DFWLanParty tomorrow night. Everyone who wants to, is of course welcome to register, but if you aren't totally sure you are going to make it out, then leave the spot for someone else who is.

On another note, I went out to visit the Ghetto LAN Party, and I have to admit, I had a pretty good time. I'm a really stinky CS player! lol But that didn't stop me from having fun. :) Their network ran smooth, and aside from only 1 or 7 client PC problems, all in all they have a pretty good LAN party going. I do not envy their drive out to DFW though.

For those of you who don't know (uh because I didn't make a news update yet) the outcome of the September DFWLanParty's "Who OWNZ DFW?" 1v1 tourney again brought c4.Lost-CaUsE to the top of the pack! Great job LC! And also, like last month, one of his own clansman was hot on his tail, as the last match was fought against c4.Morph. Creative Labs sponsored First Prize again, and LC has a Sound Blaster Live! MP3 on the way to his house via postal carrier. Congrats!

I should have time to work on the stats the pics from the Sept LAN tomorrow night, but thats not saying they will be done tomorrow :)

Don't forget the DFWLanParty Message forum is available for you all to post messages about what you would like to see at upcomming events! Check it out!

09.22.2k - 7:30pm - Status of New Patch for Q3A

Very Important Information:

WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING THE NEW 1.25 PATCH FOR Q3 Tomorrow. There is not enough time to test it for proper stability before tomorrows LAN Party. I will have it available for you to take home, BUT THE SERVERS WILL CONTINUE TO RUN 1.17.

Counter Strike will be b7.1.

That is all. :)

09.20.2k - 11:30pm - Registration for October DFWLanParty

It has come to my attention that the entire world wants to come to DFWLanParty. Well, maybe not that many, but if you take a look at the list, you will see way more than 55, which is how many chairs we have. The Registration for October 28 DFWLanParty will open on September 25, 9pm. I *might* send out a news letter to remind you, but I didn't this month or last month, as getting people ON the list has not been a problem. Its the people who go to sign up at the last minute and learn that "Oh, I'm #90."

Now, so far, we have never reached the maximum capacity of 55 in the room we currently rent. And each person on the waiting list, that has wanted to play, has been able to. That's not to say that trend will continue forever, but that is however the trend that will bump us into a new, larger building. The way I see it is, if the DFWLanParty players can fill the Red Oak Community Center 3 months in a row to 55, I would say that I could justify canceling this contract and moving to a larger place. We want to have 80-100 people don't we?? YES!!!

So, if you all remember to check the site Monday night, those of you who really want to come, but ended up at the bottom of the list this month, are now warned. :)

09.17.2k - 12:40pm - Road Trip to OKCLanParty

Another great road trip is comming to a close, as soon after this particular post is uploaded, I'll be packing up my PC and heading back to Dallas. Hopefully I'll make it back in time to begin recooperation before its back to work again tomorrow :)

Yesterday was a fun filled day of Classic CTF, lots of 1v1, Freakball, and some CS (they dont seem to play that as much in Oklahoma as we do in Dallas). We had a giant game of about 20 on 20 CCTF, and unfortunatly that mod is apparently pretty bandwidth intensive, as it lagged out pretty bad. But we all played on, and had a pretty fun round of total bedlam. You pretty much could not run anywhere there was not a rockey flying to! And the nailgun is definatly something to be desired! CCTF turned out to have some redeeming qualities!

Along with me on the trip to OKC, were Escher and Riboflavin. And we got ourselves tied up in a challenge with the staff from another Texas LAN Party, SystemAddicts LAN from Amarillo. Took some screencaps of the matches. Brutal.

And more in the JavaScript forage, as you can see on the left side, the sponsor links now rotate. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time, but have never had anyone to show me anything that knew anything. SoulPig helped with the pictures script on the Previous page, and {OLP}Timberwolf gave the script for the rotating links.

Last, we are a week out from the next DFWLanParty, so for all you people who registered, look for a newsletter in your mailbox tomorrow night. If anyone needs to cancel, please let me know ahead of time to I can let the those who were not as fast as you know that there is a spot open for them.
--Sharaz Jek

09.11.2k - 11:00pm - Pics Are Finally Done

I have finally found time to update the pictures page with the big versions of the thumbnails that have been there for a week or so. Until I learn how to make the Javascript compatible with Netscape, you will have to Use Internet Exploder for the time being.
--Sharaz Jek

09.6.2k - 10:00pm - Tidal Wave of Gamers

OMG!!! The September DFWLanParty's Registration page has been available for only 7 days... and look at it! WOW! A couple people have mentioned that they never got an invitation to come signup... sorry, but I've not been sending them out (uh, not been needing to! lol). I guess I used the phrase "sorry dude... but watch the website Monday morning and signup as soon as you can, and you'll get in next month" too many times, as they all did just that.
--Sharaz Jek

09.1.2k - 11:00am - August DFWLanParty Stats up

The stats from the August DFWLanParty are up. Go to the Previous page to see them. They don't seem to have parsed totally accurately, but hey, you begged and begged for them. Don't blame me if it says you scored fewer kills then you actually did. Write me a new program from the ground up that does it correctly, and then I'll listen to you whine. :) I'll hopefully have the pics finished today too, the thumbnails page is already up.

At the September DFWLanParty, we will again hold the "Who Ownz DFW?" Quake 3 Tournament. The first one seemed to run pretty well, and I already know of several things I plan to do differently to make it run even better next month (hehe, like how to make it not take 6 hours!).
--Sharaz Jek

08.29.2k - 8:30am - Registration Re-Opens

Ok, the bug has been squashed. An unforeseen problem arose at the 10th registration, but now the script works properly. Mad Props go out to Swifty|SXE, who is responsible for all the automated registration scripts we see in the registration section. There is actually a lot more to it than the players see... there is a ton of stuff I can do now to manage the player database online. So get those spots while they last!
--Sharaz Jek

08.29.2k - 6:30am - Registration Temporarily Off Line

Inferno helped me find a little bug in the new registration script, so I had to pull it back down. I hope to have registration back up tonight. Sorry guys!
--Sharaz Jek

08.28.2k - 9:20pm - Small Progress

The first section of the new pics is up. Its just thumbnails for now until I get the viewer worked out (its gonna be kinda cool :)

Uh, no I wasn't working the whole time like I said I would be.
--Sharaz Jek

08.28.2k - 6:20pm - Lost Won!

Well, that was an AWESOME LAN Party!!! We had our first organized tournament, and I must say it went as smoothly as I could have asked. The undefeated champion of the day was c4.LoSt-CaUsE, who took home a sweet Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer, donated by Creative Labs. And we also had a new attendance record, with the DHCP log showing 46 computers. We only lost 1 circuit breaker (uh, 2 times!) but there was like 12 people on it DUH! After we balanced out the load a little, it was smooth sailing the rest of the day.

We had some awesome door prizes that were passed out too: some nice Aiwa headphones, a couple Rat Pads from HardOCP.com, the top 2 finishers in the Tournament got a case of Bawls each, and Creative Labs had some T-shirts to give out too.

The registration for next month will likely open sometime tonight.

I'm now officially sat down to work on the web page. Hopefully I still posses pics from the July party. I definitely have pics from August. I definitely have logs from CS. The logs from the Q3 tourney may be screwed. The logs from the other Q3 server are probably ok, even though I've not yet looked at them.
--Sharaz Jek

08.23.2k - 9:10pm - Final Days

Well, we are just a few days out, and I know I'm ready to rock! This should turn out to be our best LAN party yet! There have been several cancellations, and that means many people have moved onto the guaranteed list, so be sure you check your name to see if you are in. If not, then you can try for one of the 1pm "up for grabs" seats. At ever party in the past, there has always been seats, so if you were on the sign-up list, you got an email with my cell phone # in it. Give me a call at 1pm and I'll let you guys know what's up as far as empty seats.

Servers are running pretty clean, the problems we had last month with connections being denied to the file server have been cleared up. Should be smooth sailing. All the Quake Servers have been updated (ACTF v1.3, OSP v.99d, RA3 v1.3), Counter Strike is at b6.8 (who knows what bugs they have killed and caused with the new release). Unreal Tournament has been added to the lineup (not sure who requested it, we will see if it gets any play this month, and the Quake 2 servers were (ahem!) collecting some rust from age, so I got them ready for play too. And yes, I finally got the logs working for CS, so maybe this time around we can have some CS logs to gloat over.

This non-one line post is not dedicated to Ribo (he only likes 1 liners)
--Sharaz Jek

08.15.2k - 6:25pm - A Little Sarcasm Never Hurt Anyone

Wow, look how full the Attendees list is. (translate=look how long the waiting list is... 56 and higher is "on the waiting list")
--Sharaz Jek

08.15.2k - 6:20pm - Info Page Update

I've updated the info page. Ribo hates one line posts.
--Sharaz Jek

08.13.2k - 9:00pm - Server Upgrades

Completed some server upgrades today. Both the CS server and my Dual P3 workstation got 3Com 3c905ctx NICs today. Parallel tasking means higher through put with lower CPU utilization! Then we pass the savings on to you!!! (uh, forget that...) Q3 server has had one for a while, and it has worked so well that I thought more of the same could not hurt.

Sent out a newsletter tonight, and within just a couple of minutes, delivery failure notices started appearing in my inbox. Registrants with invalid email address, who have not spoken to me in person, are the first ones to make room for people to move up on the waiting list. Replying to the DFWLanParty Newsletter is the absolute best way to keep communication above between you and me, and unless you have taken it upon yourself to let me know another way that you are in fact still coming, no confirmation and invalid email earns you the "boot" :) There's always next month!
--Sharaz Jek

08.13.2k - 9:00pm - Registration Reminders

WOW! Look at the explosion of registrations we have for the August 2000 DFWLanParty! I guess I should take a moment and remind everyone that the first 55 people on the list will have their seats guarantees until 1pm. After 1pm, any remaining seat will be "first come first serve." I also want to have the Q3 1v1 tourney under way by 4pm, so late comer's keep that in mind. There will be another DFWLP newsletter going out in the next few days reminding players to let me know about any cancellation, so I can release your spot to another player. :)

And bad news to all the people who have been asking me about stats for the July lan party. The logs are no where to be found. Oh well, we can all gloat in August when I dont (uh format them) lose the logs somehow.
--Sharaz Jek

08.12.2k - 9:21pm - Still Working

The first section of pics from previous lan parties is back up. follow the Previous link and you can see them there.

08.11.2k - New Site Design

Well, here is the new site design! I'm totally excited to have something new for dfwlanparty.com. I built this new design from the ground up with Dreamweaver 3, and needless to say, I'm very happy with the way the site turned out. I've been bouncing this idea around for some time now, and I finally put it into html! Just so you will all know, link here and there may not work for a few days till I finish up the updates. If a broken link does not seem to work after a few days, feel free to email me and let me know. :)

Someone on a modem email me and let me know how much faster the page loads (which i certainly hope it does! lol)

08.08.2k -- 3:00am -- Idea For Next LAN Party

I'm pretty seriously considering holding a tournament of some sort at the next DFWLanParty (yes there will be a cool prize). Most likely a Q3 tournament. Prolly double elimination. If we can get at least 16 people involved, then I think it would be fun enough to be worth the time and effort it would take to run it. There is a topic in the message forum on this here.

On the technical front, I have unfortunately devised the perfect set of instructions for installing Win2k on a Promise Fasttrak66 RAID controller (works the same way for a modded Ultra66 controller too). I had the unfortunate pleasure of having my computer put in a state where it needed a reload (not by me *grr*), and I was up till 3 this morning remembering the steps it takes to install Win2k. My adventures are posted here.

Well, that's all for now, this non 1-sentence post is dedicated to Riboflavin!

08.01.2k -- 8:00am -- QuakeCon 2000

Went to the early setup for QuakeCon 2000 last night, and not surprisingly, they ended up delaying the door opening (typical?) until like after 10pm. So Quinton and I get in there, and we meet up with Rage, -dloob-, Inferno, and Lost-Cause (LC seemed to be having trouble keeping people from sneezing and spraying on his PC?). We also saw some non-local-yokels, such as {KYA}LABTYD, Gabriel{AoA}, Trinity{AoA}, and Mitzkrieg (other folks who prowl the T2K message board forums). Also saw a couple of my Okla-homies, Despite and Epoth from OKCLanParty. And that was only the first night of the early setups, so I'm fairly sure I'll be seeing more and more of all our pals soon.

So last night, when we were setting up, they hand out a sheet pf paper to each registrant, and on it, I was very surprised to see the IP address that was manually assigned to me. ??? So then some one tells me that "oh yeah... they don't want DHCP cuz it slows down the network!" Now theres something I've never heard before! Not sure if I agree, but on well.

I'm at work right now, fun huh? After leaving a 1000 person LAN party and dragging yourself out of bed, hehe, its hard to focus your priorities :) Anyway, I'm going straight back after work tonight, so I'll update you all again tomorrow!

08.01.2k -- 1:00pm -- New Sponsor
We have a new sponsor on board with DFWLanParty. In case you did not notice, let me direct your attention to the left side of the page where the sponsor buttons are, and we can all see that HardOCP and Ratpadz both have links listed. HardOCP.com is an awesome place to learn the ins and outs of envelope pushing overclocking techniques *ahem ribo* and Ratpadz.com is where we can get our high tech way cool mousing surfaces. And what else does that mean? Well, I would suppose it means that some lucky people will walk out of the next DFWLanParty with some cool swag! And BTW... for those of you who didn't know... hardocp.com and ratpadz.com are local homies!

07.30.2k -- 1:30pm -- Other Network Frippery
Well, I decided to downgrade from Windows 2000 Advanced Server to the base Windows 2000 Server. When my copy of Windows 2000 Server arrived from M$ long ago, I ended up warezing a copy of Advanced Server within a week, and I thought "cool!" Well, if you think higher resource overhead is cool, then I congratulate you on your slower server O/S. :) Windows 2000 Server runs much better then Advanced Server for me. So all you warez monkeys who went out and downloaded your time cracked versions of Advanced Server, get back out there and find you a place to download the regular version! Well, unless you own a motherboard with 8 Xeon slots and things to fill them with. hehe.
--Sharaz Jek

07.29.2k -- 10:30pm -- File Server Upgrade

File server got an upgrade today. Added a 60GB hard drive, bringing the new figure to 126 gigs of available hard drive space (swapped out the 27 that was in there) WOW! Thas a lota puddin!

For all you schmucks who keep icq bombing me about the stats and pics, I should have them up sunday night, but the more emails and icqs I have to answer on the subject, disctracts me from the task at hand... hehe

Last, the network backbone is being upgraded from the Linksys 8 port 10/100 switch to a brand new rack mountable NetGear 16 port 10/100 switch. We've been filling up each port on the 8 port at LAN parties. Obviously we need more ports to be able to expand, right? And the good thing for all you players is that soon you will get to benefit from the next upgrade, as the lineup of 16 port 10/100 hubs is being replaced with 3 24 port 10/100 switches in the next month or so. Look for them around the Sept. 2000 DFWLanParty.

07.23.2k -- 8:50pm -- Day After a Great LAN!!

What a great LAN party!!! 12 hours straight of all the gibbing goodness a person can handle, and pizza to boot! hehe. So did we all have fun? I know I sure did. Can't wait to do it all again next month.

The server's DHCP log showed a new record for total clients, comming in at 42! Last month we had 39. DFWLanParty keeps on growing and growing, and its all because of you guys! Thanks for helping us to become what we are! I'm not totally sure to be honest, but I think DFWLanParty has grown to the largest regular LAN party in the Dallas area (and if we arnt now, we will be soon!). Each month since weve moved to the new room, weve had more players than the previous month, and thats cool.

A real big shout out and Thank You to Elbarak, owner of Seaworx.com. Seaworx.com supplied all the soda that kept you from being thisty as you ate pizza! Thanks Elbarak!! And also wanna thank Riboflavin, Pussywiggle, Knight, Mr. Cool,

Registration will be open for next months fest soon, so keep an eye on the signup page. There will also be pics and stats uploaded soon too, and I'll update those pages too. Oh yeah, the requirments page has been updated too.

07.19.2K -- 1:30am -- DFWLanParty Hits the Road to Oklahoma

Wow, kind of lacking in news updates lately, sorry guys I have actually been very busy with real life, which seems to always get in the way of what we all know is most important. I started a new job last week, and I'm still adjusting to sleeping and waking at normal people hours :)

Last weekend, I did however make it out of town to OKCLanParty in Oklahoma City. We had a blast! I did really well in a Q3 1v1 tourney, and they also had a Instagib CTF tourney too. I had never tried Rail only CTF, but I must say it was very cool. Definitely levels the playing field, even the people who are not as good as the top dogs can be a valuable team player. And it is HARD to score a capture that is for sure! lol

So are we all looking forward to this weekend? I know I am!! I've not had time to send out news letters and things like that, so I kind of worry that attendance may not be as high as we would all like, but we will see. I'll be sending one out tomorrow. I've also not heard back in from too many of the sponsors that had expressed interest in DFWLanParty and the gamers that attend. Oh well, if I don't hear back from them, we will figure something out.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday!! Oh yeah... if you registered for the July 22 Lan Party, and your name is not on the list anymore, its because you entered an invalid email address. I need you to reregister (tho I'll still let you in if you don't :). You need a valid email address so you can receive the newsletters.

06.28.2K -- 12:30am -- DFWLanParty Hits the Road to Houston

Hey everyone! I'm out of town this weekend, and where am I? I'm at a lan party! Surprised? Not at all! I'm in Houston for the weekend, staying at {C4}Quinton's house, and Q, {C4}Pussywiggle and I came and crashed a little LAN clan [T2K] was holding. We are at an apartment complex with a 155mbit connect, and WOW it smokes! So I'll prolly spend most of the day taking bludgeonings like a man from PW. Ah well, thats enough webpaging... time to FRAG BABY!
--Sharaz Jek

06.28.2K -- 12:30am -- Email Addresses and Registrations

I'll apologize in advance, but those of you who registered for the next DFWLanParty and did not enter an ICQ number AND did not give a valid email account, are going to be removed from the list. I MUST be able to contact you about upcoming events and changes. If you registered and see that your name is not on the list anymore, you are more than welcome to reregister again, but you must put in a valid email address so I can contact you.
--Sharaz Jek

06.26.2K -- 3:20pm -- Stats and Stuff

The stats worked out ok, but they are still not what I would really like. If Gibstats had support for OSP logs, then I would be in a perfect LAN world. Well, maybe not. Gibstats cannot read 1v1 logs per match. It just shows the whole days activity as one huge graph. If you kicked lots of butt, then you will be at the top, but you cant see who beat who in what match. OSP Tourney gives the server flexibility so I don't have to sit in front of it all day and monitor the maps, but the downside is it write funny logs, that so far can only be read by Æstats. Æstats is cool, but it cannot show details of match by match scores, which my old parser could. The old parser could not read OSP logs. :( Then of course, I didn't take logs of the Counter-Strike servers, so oops! The other hard thing about stats is people tend to change their names throughout the day, and that makes them not appear as high on the graph as they should.

And on a load balancing note, since the servers ran so well by splitting Q3 and Half-Life up, I've gone one step further and added another NIC to the Q3 server, and split the IP addresses Venus used among the 2 NICs. I figure that the less traffic a single NIC must contend with, the better the whole network will run on game day.
--Sharaz Jek

06.25.2K -- 6:00pm -- Another Great LAN Party!

Well, another month has come and gone, and this one again broke a new attendence record. 39 people came and fragged, and showed brotherly love to those who would stand in front of their railguns! Thanks to everyone who came, and to Knight, Pussywiggle, Quinton, Escher, Crue for all the help setting up and tearing down. It wouldn't happen without you guys, so thanks a bunch!

As I mentioned last night, Creative Labs is considering comming on board as a sponsor of DFWLanParty. They send me some shirts and stuff to give away as door prizes (duh, you were all there and saw it! lol) and if it works out, we may be seeing more cool stuff that gamers like to play with too!

Stats will be up soon. When they are uploaded, the first word in this paragraph will be a link to them. If its not a link, I'm not done parsing. :)

Pics will be up soon. When they are uploaded, the first word in THIS paragraph will be a link to them (original, huh? hehe). If its not a link, then I'm not down editing. :) Thanks Elbarak and Crue for being the digital camera squad!

Finally, registration is open for the July 22, 2000 fest is now open. If you want to attend, register quick! there will be 55 seats, and if you want one of them, well you know the drill. See you all next month!
--Sharaz Jek

06.20.2K -- 10:20am -- Half-Life Server

I've been thinking on how I can resolve the less than satisfactory performance that the Half-Life server saw last month. Pings of over 40 are bad. Granted, the server is run on a Dual 500 Celeron with 256 megs of RAM, but with only 1 NIC, that could be causing a bottleneck. I've switched out the NIC in the Q3 server with a 3com, so that should help. I've also moved Half-Life over to the Quake2 server, since there probably will only be 1 or 2 Quake2 servers running at any given time (lower demand for Q2).

On a related note, the Quake2 server has received an upgrade. It was sporting a P2-400, but I dropped in a new motherboard and a P3-550. I hope to get a hold of a new Abit or Asus motherboard (why, oh why did I sell mine? lol) and this chip will overclock to 616 and still not need extra cooling (I've already tested it >:) Also, this server now has a brand new NIC from Netgear, (FA311) so we will see how it performs. If it sucks butt, then I'll get another 3com, but Netgear has always worked well for me in the past, so I'm hopeful that this new model from Netgear will perform well too.

Oh yeah.. many people askin' this, sooo here it is: Entry fee is $10 pre-registerd, $15 at the door. Bring extra $5 if you wanna get in on pizza at dinner time. There are resturaunts nearby if you don't prefer pizza :) The first 55 people listed on the Registered Attendees page will have guaranteed seats until 2pm. At 2pm, anyone on the list can have whatever seat is still available, they will be first come first served at that time. You will be able to call and find out if there are seats available.
--Sharaz Jek

i have decided that i don't feel like doing the rest of this. :) It will prolly be vapor soon anyway.

06.15.2K -- 1:43am -- Hawaii's Parachute Ready!

Good news for anyone who pulls a "Hawaii" at any future LAN parties. I've prepared a ready to rock, quake pre-installed Norton Ghost image of Windows 98, that can be installed remotely via a network DOS boot disk (that I also made :) I tested it a few minutes ago, loading to an empty hard drive, and the image loaded and was ready to boot in about 8 minutes. If anyone would like to help further test it, let me know at the lan party :) And big props out to Rage, who donated the WD hard drive that is now the holding the Ghost Server stuff on Jupiter. Thanks Rage!

Also, I culled back some of the links on the left side, in attempt to make the site a little more friendly to poeple who are not fortunate enough to be able to run higher resolutions. Staff, Preferred Games, and Requirements have all been moved to the Info page.

--Sharaz Jek
06.06.2K -- 3:08am -- 2 Weeks Out!

The next DFWLanParty is 2 weeks from today! Whoo hoo! I can't wait to frag and be fragged by you all! Lots of new names registered too, so that means fresh meat (who knows if it will be us or them?)!

Been doing some maintenance and upgrades on the servers and my workstation. I finally got around to buying a dual P3 board, so now that extra P3-500 thats been in my desk for too long has something to do other than occupy a box. I got an IWill DBD100 motherboard, and so far its running great. Server Issues: Network logon requests that were being dropped due to the Domain Controller (Jupiter) being busy (with you bastards leeching files! lol) should not happen anymore, as Venus is now a redundant Domain Controller for the network. Active Directory of Win2k is pretty interesting. Sometimes it will wait quite a long time after you have enabled a new service on another server untill it comes online, and starts playing nice with the others DC's on the network. Also changed the IP scheme we use, so we can service more than 255 clients. *Sharaz Jek stares off to space optimistically wondering how big can we actually get?* lol

The MP3 Page found under the INFO link has also been updated.

--Sharaz Jek
06.06.2K -- 3:08am -- Stats Work!!!

I finally found a parser that can read Q3 OSP Tourney logs without major problems. Æstats is able to read and parse the logs, and the HTML output is very nice. If you've never seen this program, you can grab it here. Anyway, after the next LAN party, there will be stats for everyone to view! YAY!!!

On a side note, we also now own dfwlanparty.net and dfwlanparty.org. All 3 DFWLanParty URLs point here. :)

Oh yeah! One more thing! DFWLanParty was featured in a pic of the day on lanparty.com!!! if you go to the site, and click on the pic of the day, click previous a few times and you will see the DFWLanParty servers as they sat back at my old house!

--Sharaz Jek
06.04.2K -- 11:50am -- Trying New Stat Parsers

I've been looking at about every stat logging program I can find, and I think I've found one that may be able to read the Q3 OSP logs better. Pussywiggle and I will be testing it some today, so I'll let you all know how it goes. Man, a LAN party without stats to look at, is almost a LAN party that never happened :)

--Sharaz Jek
05.28.2K -- 11:45am -- D-Day +1

Well, that was one awesome LAN party! A new record for attendance, we hit 31! Whoo Hoo! I started to wonder if we were going to be having power nightmares, but that problem was quickly put down with quick rerunning of power cables. All in all, it turned out to be a fun day for everybody. Regisration for the June LAN Party is now open, so go sign up today!

One thing I did forget to do the whole day was to take screenshots of games I played in, so if you have screenshots from yesterday, email them to sharazjek@dfwlanparty.com and I'll add them to the screenshots page (which has been updated)

We gave out some cool door prizes, and the winners were Riboflavin, DB, (Everglide Mousepads) Creed, Quinton, (Headphones) and Total Annihilation (APC Battery Backup Unit). Thanks to Everglide for sponsoring the mousepads, and to Seaworx.com for sponsoring the battery unit and all the drinks that kept everyone from being thirsty during the lan party! Don't forget Seaworx offers lots of great computer services including website hosting and creation, and hardware and software sales, and they are local too. Check them out!

Last, I wanna give a shoutout to a few people who came early and stayed late and helped with all the setup and take down. Props to Quinton, Pussywiggle, Fraggle Rock, Escher, Eratamus, and Knight, having volunteers to help with the whole thing definitely makes it possible to have a quality LAN party for people to come to! Thanks guys!

Oh yeah! And I'm thinking of making up some bumper stickers that say...

I Re-installed my Operating System at a DFWLANParty

(for Hawaii hahaha)

--Sharaz Jek
05.26.2K -- 9:51pm -- Gettin Ready

We are having a small little lan here at mi casa tonight with myself, PW, Quinton, Escher, and Fraggle. Just messin' around a little, but we are using this time to try to work out some bugs in the Q3 logs. With the new OSP Tourney mod, the logs don't seem to write correctly, as they did with the straight id version of the game. There are a few more logging options I have to play with, so we will see what happens. If worst comes to worst, we won't have any Q3 logs to check out after the party. But we will see what I can pull out of my sleeve :)

--Sharaz Jek
05.26.2K -- 9:30am -- Registration Closed - D-Day is Tomorrow!

I've decided to go ahead and close registration for the May DFWLanParty since the waiting list is becoming quite long. For the newcomers who have not received the forward of the newsletter, the first 55 people on the list are guaranteed their seats till 2pm, and after that all remaining seats become first come, first served.

The LanParty will last from noon to midnight on May 27th. Directions are in the newsletter, and the map is on the Location page. Everyone bring headphones, powerstrip, ethernet cable, and $10! This is going to be such an awesome LAN party!!! whoo hoo!

--Sharaz Jek
05.23.2K -- 1:47am -- Newsletter Out for Registered Attendees

OK, I sent out a newsletter to the registered attendees, so everyone check your mail. Lots of info there, but if you have other questions, email me and ill get you the info you need quick. Also, the out of towners got an extra email that lists local hotels and stuff, so if you did not get the email let me know ASAP, as this is a racing weekend here in Dallas, and the hotels fill up fast.

--Sharaz Jek
05.16.2K -- 1:00am -- Game Host Upgrades

Server game host upgrades today. I downloaded and tested the OSP Tourney mod for Q3, and I liked it so much that I downloaded the same for Q2. Not sure why I never did before, but the admin options it offers are stellar. Clients also have much better voting options, so that means more time for me to spend playing instead of players whining for a different map or something. There are now 4 Q3 and 4 Q2 servers running various DM, CTF, and Instagib mods that will be up all day at the next LAN party. Its all server side, so don't worry about downloading any files for it.

--Sharaz Jek
05.15.2K -- 12:30am -- Site News

Well, I finally have killed all the little bugs with the website that have been driving me nuts for so long. I finally figured out how to keep the top and left frames from resizing based on browser resolution, and the web caching problem that was keeping the rollovers on the left side from working has been corrected too. With the caching problem fixed, the site will load much faster now. Nice to finally look at the site in the way that Shrike originally envisioned it (the problem was he let me have the task of updating it!).

--Sharaz Jek
05.04.2K -- 7:00pm -- New Look for Registered Attendees Page

The headline says it all I guess. The Registrants are now numbered in the order they were received. As I said before, the first 55 people to register are guaranteed their seats until 2pm. Any one who is 56 on up can have what ever seat is left over at 2pm. 56 on up will be considered to be on the waiting list", and as I receive cancellation notices, I'll adjust the list and move people up to fill in the spaces.

Many people have been asking about the cost of the next party, and it will $10 for those who pre-register, and $15 at the door for walk-ins. Don't forget to bring $5 extra for pizza!

--Sharaz Jek
05.04.2K -- 7:00pm -- Registration Will Close Soon

Well, I've decided that I will close registration, and begin a waiting list when the attendees page reaches 55 registrants. Basically, you will be able to count down the page and see what number you are. If you are 56, then you will have any available spot at 2pm. If you are 55 or earlier, you are guaranteed your seat until 2pm. I plan to update the Registered Attendees page with a numbering scheme so it's easier to read and see what number you are. As I get cancellation notices, I will probably email out a newsletter to let you all know who has moved into the guaranteed seat list, and who is still waiting.

Oh, and anyone who would like to see the design of the new DFWLanParty website, go here, and scroll to the bottom. Our Website designer, Shrike, of Red Point Graphics, is working on a totally new design for DFWLanParty. Shrike is one of the most talented graphics artists I've met, you should check out all the great art he does at his site. I'm definitely excited about the new look the site will have!

--Sharaz Jek
04.29.2K -- 12:00pm -- New Sponsor

DFWLanParty has a new sponsor on board, SeaWorx.com. They will be sponsoring soda for us, as well as a very very cool door prize. SeaWorx has a full line of products to take care of all your computing hardward or website needs, so check them out at their website!

--Sharaz Jek
04.20.2K -- 12:10pm -- Calm Morning After

Well, another great LAN party has come and gone. A small turnout again, as I overlooked the fact that I scheduled another LAN party to compete with a holiday weekend. Oh well, "note to self..." :)

Lots of great Q3 CTF, FFA, lots and lots of 1v1, and there was even a few people playing Clan Arena. We also have several fierce rounds of Counter Strike 4 on 4.

I've updated the Screenshots page with some sreenshots and pics that Crue took with his digital camera. And the Stats page has been updated too, with stats from the Q3 CTF and FFA servers. Unfortuatly the 1v1 log got trashed, and was unreadable by the log parser program. Oh well.

Registration for the May LAN Party is up now! Starting in May, we will be in our big rented room, we will have door prizes, and no limit on how many people can register (well, theoretically). The only difference is that we will now have to charge a small entrance fee ($10) to cover the cost of the room, but I promise it will be worth it! Register Today!!

--Sharaz Jek

04.20.2K -- 10:38pm -- Updates

Screenshots page has finally been updated. :) What took so long? No telling!

--Sharaz Jek

04.20.2K -- 7:08pm -- Rollovers?

Is anyone having a problem with the image rollovers on the left side when using Internet Explorer 5.01? I've been having a problem with it for a few weeks now, but before it worked perfect. I'm not sure if its a problem with my box, or if its a MS problem. Under Netscape it works fine, quickly swapping the alternate image, no matter how fast I scroll by. Under IE501, they each take a second to download with each hover. If anyone else is experiencing this problem, post a message or email me and let me know also when version of IE you are using.

And yes, in the html code, it is specified to "pre-cache" the rollover images, so I know its not that. :) *sigh*

--Sharaz Jek

04.19.2K -- 12:51pm -- Some Site Changes

Well, as you can see, the site is going throught some changes. The changes I'm making here are just interim, as in the next few weeks, you will see an entirely new site design for DFWLanParty.com! The color and style changes will probably take me most of the day, as most of the graphics will have to be redone 1 by 1. Anyway, I'm just toying around with some new ideas, so feel free to post thoughts to the forum on the new site design. :)

--Sharaz Jek

04.19.2K -- 1:01am -- Fun Name Problems?

I finally got my Quake 3 funname to work without cutting the last half of my name off. Whew! Something I noticed that I think most people who use fun names have not noticed is that you should close your name settings and reset back to the original white, even with no other characters. Like this:

"^4[^1DLP^4]SharazJek^7"

The last ^7 resets it back to white. The reason you should do this is so that when you enter a tourney server, you don't bleed your color onto your opponent. At the CPL, every time I entered a tourney server, my name would be blue, even though I was not using a funname (it was supposed to be white). Also, as mentioned above, I had a problem with my name breaking off the last part of it when I tried to use a funname. Most name making programs put the color code in front of every letter, regardless of a color change. My name was turning out to be about 25 characters long, and would get cut off. I removed all the unneeded color changes in the SharazJek part, and the problem was gone.

--Sharaz Jek

04.17.2K -- 10:00pm -- Game Server Stat Logs Up

The server logs from the Razer/CPL event are up now on the Stats Page. Check em out, find yourself, and see how you did compared to the others you saw in your crosshairs!

And WHOO HOO!! We are barely a week away from the next DFWLanParty! I know I Can't wait!

--Sharaz Jek

04.16.2K -- 11:59pm -- Busted at CPL!!

Everyone remember Mr. Pussywiggle??? He will hate me for this!!

Yah Yah, PW, I know you have lots of shots of you beating the tar out of me, but I just thought I would ask "So how does the crow taste?" For the record, the match was 1v1, rail-only InstaGib.

--Sharaz Jek

04.11.2K -- 6:50pm -- CPL or Bust!!!

Today I begin my vacation days from work so I can go the Razer/CPL event here in Dallas! (Isn't a LAN party a great thing to spend hard earned vacation days on? YOU BET!!!) It's going to be awesome! Mr. Pussywiggle, Quinton and I will head up there Thursday morning and try to get us some good real estate.

DFWLanParty's Dual Celeron 500MHz server will be there, running several Counter Strike and Quake 3 servers for people to play on. Stay tuned here to see stats, as I'm going to record Quake 3 logs for 4 days straight! lol

--Sharaz Jek

04.06.2K -- 5:30pm -- Room is Ready!

WOW!! I just got back from going to check out the room DFWLanParty has rented to play in, and it's better than I could have imagined! It has all the tables and chairs we will need, about 15 ceiling fans hanging from the wall, great air conditioning, and at least 12 circuits for us to plug computers into (generally, one circuit translates to 6 PCs). And couches! And a water fountain! All the comforts of home! Whoo Hoo!

DFWLanParty also now has our own IRC channel on irc.ticnet.com:6667 #dfwlanparty. Stop in and say hi!

AND!!! My new email address is sharazjek@dfwlanparty.com

--Sharaz Jek

04.05.2K -- 12:00am -- Major Site Changes???

It's time to update your bookmarks for the DFWLanParty website! We have a new URL! Whoo hoo!!!

http://www.dfwlanparty.com!!!

--Sharaz Jek

04.01.2K -- 12:09am -- OK People! Listen UP!!!
set rant_mode 1

OK... CANADIANS... read this!!! I don't want you (or anyone else outside the U.S.) to think I don't like you, 'cuz I'm sure if I met you in person, we would become friends. But lets think about this whole "I don't even live in the United States of America" thing for just one second. Dallas is 1000 miles from Canada. DFWLanParty is a LAN party. That means we all sit in the same room, and play together.

Now, I'm not going to ever exclude anyone from registering. That would be mean, and gather lots of bad press, wouldn't it now? Yes, it would. But are you REALLY going to drive or fly down to Dallas, TX, USA for one day of gaming? You are more than welcome to, but...

I THINK NOT!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!

set rant_mode 0

--Sharaz Jek (who never ceases to be amazed!)

03.31.2K -- 7:09pm -- 22 Days!

Man, Finally get to the end of the month! Whew! Only 22 days till the next LAN party! I can't wait!

Not much news to report, but I did get a new Hub for the network, 16 port 100mbps. That means I'm thinking about selling one of my 8 port 10/100's so I can replace it with another 16 port. If anyone is interested in buying one from me, email me.

--Sharaz Jek

03.24.2K -- 11:00am -- Seating Issues

I've been thinking about the seating policy and how it relates to the registration of players. After consulting some with the admin of OKCLanParty, I've decided to adopt his old policy from the days before his was in a large place like we will move to in May. Here it is:

The first 22 registrants will be guaranteed their seats - until 2pm. At 2pm, what ever seats are left will be considered open season. Everyone that registers will get email inquiring for possible cancellations, and I'll give out my cell phone number in the same email so anyone can call and find out if there are any seats available.

Remember, you can email if you have questions about your registration status.

--Sharaz Jek

03.24.2K -- 8:20am -- Problem Fixed

I figured out a temporary fix to the problem and the correct order is listed now. Whew!!

03.24.2K -- 7:30am -- Registration Script

The registration script is making some interesting decisions on what order to list the registrations in. It seems to have started back at the top of the list, and is working back down. There will obviously be some confusion as to who is and who is not on the waiting list, but at some point I will come back through and make a listing here of the actual order. Sharaz Jek down throught Mr. Pussywiggle are the actual 1-14, and GetSome thru NikeMac are 15-19 and so on. If you have any question as to what number you are email me.

Strange part is, when I check the database on the webserver, everyone appears to be in the correct order. Oh well :)

--Sharaz Jek

03.23.2K -- 11:30am -- Most People Don't Get It!!!

OK for anyone who doesn't know...

DFWLanParty is located in the USA!!!

NO, we do not have a Guest Book! The Registration Page is not a Guest Book!

If you live more than about 6 hours away from Dallas, TX, I will very likely delete your registration unless you EMAIL ME FIRST!!! (or unless you already personally know me).

Until we move, DFWLanParty has a limited number of seats, and therefore does not have the registration space to fill up with people from other countries who will not be showing up anyway. Sorry guys :)

--Sharaz Jek

03.22.2K -- 10:10am -- Registration Open for April 2000

Registration for the April 2000 DFWLanParty is now open. Get over there and get signed up!

Today, I plan to go out looking for a suitable place for us to hold the next DFWLanParty in. I have a few places in mind, hopefully one of them will meet the price, power, availability, and accommodation requirements DFW-LP will have. I'll keep you all posted.

Which brings me to another topic, registration limits. This month, I do not plan to close registration until a much later point. Or maybe not at all (wouldn't that be awesome)! What I do plan to do is to let the registration run until just before the party. If we happen to be forced to have the next DFWLanParty at my house, I will go down the list and take the top 25 registrants, minus cancellations (which I will not remove to keep the data base in order). If you are in the top 25, you will get an email letting you know so. I realize that this may not be the best backup plan, but hopefully plan B will not come into play at all!

--Sharaz Jek

03.20.2K -- 7:10pm -- D-Day +2

Well, another great day of fragging has come and gone! Start counting down the days, as soon the April frag fest will be here, and it will be time to do it all again!

I recorded logs of the entire day for all the Q3A servers, and you can view the stats at the links below. Check 'em out and see how you did!

CTF Server -- 1v1 Server -- FFA Server

We had a few exciting games of Q3CTF 7v7! The more the crazier I always say! Next month we need to get some bedlam going in a huge FFA server. >:)

I've opened registration for the April 2000 DFWLanParty, so if you are interested, get over to the registration page and sign up!

--Sharaz Jek

03.17.2K -- 11:10am -- D-Day is Tomorrow!

We are one day away from what should turn out to be our most exciting frag fest yet! We'll have some out of towners, some new faces, and several regulars. Everyone who has recieved registration notices please check your email for last minute updates!

--Sharaz Jek

03.16.2K -- 5:44pm -- New Q3A Patch 1.16n

The net patch came out for Q3A (1.16n) the other day, and its installed and is definitely stable for play. As always, the patch will be available on the file server to anyone who does not already have the 8 MB download.

Also, everyone remember to bring your headphones! Distraction from speakers was an issue from the last lan party, so lets try to keep down to a mild uproar!

I have also come across an awesome Q3A log parser, and after the next LAN Party, there will be a link to view the stats for the entire day. I'll record all the CTF, 1v1, and FFA matches that the servers run, and then you can all check out who was the baddest of them all! If anyone is interested in the program, I'll have it on the file server (I'd make a link, but I'd just mess it up! :)

--Sharaz Jek

03.12.2K -- 2:07am -- The Polls are UP!!

Unbelievable! I was reading the web hit stats a few minutes ago, and apparently DFWLanParty has gained an unsurpassed amount of popularity in... Virginia!!! That's right folks, someone (or maybe many people) from Virginia (and on AOL) has hit DFWLanParty 493 times out of 1072 hits so far this month. Are you insane? Or are there no LAN parties in Virginia? DFW is a very long drive from Virginia, but if someone from Virginia wants to send me a hello via email, I'll put up a "Post of Honor" in their name!

Geez! Gamers are NUTS!!!

--Sharaz Jek

03.10.2K -- 4:47pm -- New Mod/Patch Info

The new beta 6 of Counter Strike for Half-Life is coming out tonight, and the servers will be running that version for the next lan party. The Quake 3 servers will also be running the 1.16m version, and if the new patch comes out, ill update to that too.

All patches, mods, and maps that the servers are running will be available on the network if you don't already have them downloaded when you arrive on Saturday.

--Sharaz Jek

03.09.2K -- 1:10am -- New Information on Site

There is a new page on the DFWLanParty site, and it will be the Information Page. There you can find about any info you may be looking for, and for now its populated with a very common question get from many LANers, and that is "Whatcha got under the hood?"

The buttons to the left have not yet been updated, but the one that previously took you to the "Links" page now takes you "Information" page. Eventually it will be better organized there, and include industry links as well as other pertinent information for DFWLanParty.

Also, in game server news, I have added 2 more active servers that will run during lan parties. There is now a server running Q2 (Lithium and NightHunters mods... dude you have to check out NightHunters!!! Awesome!) and UT (DM and CTF). Soon we even plan to have an extra machine that will act as a chase cam for Q3 1v1 games, so people can watch the action as it happens on a huge 26" monitor!

--Sharaz Jek

03.08.2K -- 9:51pm -- Registration is now for Waiting List

Registration reached the maximum today at about 4:15pm, so at this point anyone who registers will be considered to be on the waiting list. If your nickname does not appear here, then you are on the waiting list.

[DLP]Sharaz Jek; Swifty; [DLP]TigerDan; Quinton; Rottz; Godess[GoM]; Mr. Pussywiggle; Ram; Crue; Inferno; Getsome; Seaton; CREED; Knight; Fuller; pilgrim; (DLP) Escher; Hawaii5-0[Y2K]; dloob; LordLiquid

I went ahead and listed the names here, in case the script got smart and filled in the holes in the database left when I deleted some people that were from like Wisconsin. Knight was the second to last person to register, but his name happens to appear in the middle of the group. I just don't wanna have to deal with any problems :) If anyone has a question about the status of their registration email me or contact me via ICQ - 8132754

--Sharaz Jek

03.08.2K -- 10:28am -- Site Additions

Some more site maintenance today, we are in the process of adding an FTP directory. The Downloads link will lead there soon. This will be a mirror of the maps and add-on paks directories here locally on the network.

Also, Shrike, DFW's webmaster, made an update to the news site the next morning. I blundered and somehow obliterated it, but I found it and pasted it to its proper chronological position. The missing update is dated 02.27.2k. OOPS!

--Sharaz Jek

03.06.2K -- 3:37am -- Registration Reopens

Registration is now online again, and the automated registration script should be fully functional and work properly for everyone. Swifty, Casper (from VRGN, our web host) and I worked on it all night long troubleshooting it, and gladly, we got the glitches nailed down. Major props to Casper and Swifty!! They both volunteered time and hard work to make DFWLanParty that much better! Thanks guys!

One important thing: only the first 20 people to register will have spots at the next LAN party. If you get spot 21, then you will be on the waiting list, and I'll email or call if a spot opens. There are a few people who registered under the old system, and I've promised them the spots that they claimed, so there is a slight possibility that someone may look like they are getting a spot and not, but I doubt that will happen.

So go hammer that new registration script!!!

--Sharaz Jek

03.06.2K -- 1:49am -- SQL Driver Hell!

Automation of the Sign Up page is turning out to be a larger ordeal then we ever imagined! At least after all is said and done, the web server is gonna have every last update patch available! We still have a few hours before I decide to postpone further, so we will see what the rest of the early morning hours bring us.

--Sharaz Jek

03.05.2K -- 12:29am -- Registration Changes

Don't anyone register on the current page, we are going through a little change here. There are already like 6 or 7 registered for the next fest, and I'll guarantee their spots, but until the registration page is open again, we wont take anymore registrations till then. Should be no more than a day or two. The changes are going to make the whole process easier for us all.

--Sharaz Jek

03.04.2K -- 2:00am -- Next DFWLanParty Announced

The next DFW LanParty has been anounced, and it will be March 18th, 12pm-12am. Everyone that would like to attend is encouraged to get your registration is ASAP, as the spots go quickly.

The new site change over went smoothly, and if you are reading this, then you made it to the right place. :) Now go post a message in the new forum!!!

--Sharaz Jek

02.29.2K -- 10:30pm -- Calm Morning After

WOW!!!! That was the most unbeliveable lan party we've ever had!!! Started the day with some fast Quake 3 DM action, chugged thru the afternoon with some hardcore 6 on 6 CounterStrike, then finished out the night with lots of 1 on 1 and Q3CTF! The DHCP log showed 21 unique IP address, setting a new record for DFWLanParty!!! Whoo hoo!!

And we had lots of new faces too! We keep growing and growing, that means that soon the goal of fragging in a large room will be reality!

I should have some demos and screenshots soon from the lanparty, VoiD as always was our fiathful demo recorder, so we will have his point of view of several battles up for download in the next few days.

--Sharaz Jek

02.27.2K -- 1:57pm -- The Smoke Clears

It seems we have yet another successful LAN party last night. I didn't get there till late, but there were still about 15 fraggers there. I shot a bit of video tape, so when I get the necessary software - and hardware too, for that matter - I'll upload some pics to the screenshot page.

I understand that nine pizzas were consumed in about 10 minutes. Everyone check to make sure you still have all your fingers, sheesh! Just like pirahnas, heheh.

Sometime in the future, expenses permitting (which means how bad does everyone want a nice big space, with plenty of room for lots more fraggers) we will be getting a larger space. It will have to be rented, thus you'll pay a bit more to attend, but its up to the attendees. We'll stay in touch and post deatails concerning prices and dates. In the meantime, thanks for coming, and especially thanks for treating Sharaz Jek's and TigerDan's house with enough respect that it still stands! Heheheh, thanks all.

-Shrike

02.23.2K -- 11:51pm -- Site Moving

Well, exciting news today! DFWLanParty HQ is moving! We will now be hosted by Virtual Reality Games Network, and I'm excited about the opportunities that this will open up for DFWLanParty! When its time to update your bookmarks, I'll put up a redirect that will take you to the new URL (well, I say "I'll put up the redirect"... but really Shrike will do it.. if I do it, you will likely get a 'Error 404 - Page Not Found' :). Actually, truth be known, the URL is live now, I'm just not telling you what it is since the site it not all moved over yet. But it will be soon, so stay tuned! Same FRAG Time, Same FRAG Channel!

--Sharaz Jek

02.21.2K -- 9:24pm -- Registration Closed

Registration for the next DFWLanParty is now closed. Unfortunately, as I added the final name to the list, I got another request for a spot, and unfortunately I had to reply back and ask them to try to register for the next one earlier. But do you all know what the really good news about that is???

IT MEANS WE NEED A LARGER PLACE TO HOLD BIGGER FRAG FESTS!!! It also means I have to get off my butt on my days off and find a place that is cheap, has tables and chairs, and meets the power requirement necessary to power all the hardware. If anyone wants to send me regular encouragement via email to do just this, then do so. It's more likely to happen if people yap to me about it. ;p

I also downloaded the 116j patch that quickly followed the 116h patch for Q3A, and ill be testing that out this week more to make sure its nice and LANParty happy.

Tonight I sent out a short newsletter to those who are on the registered list. If you didn't get the email and see this, let me know before the fest, and ill shoot it out to you. But I should not have missed anyone.

Can't wait to see you all in my crosshairs!

--Sharaz Jek

02.18.2K -- 9:46pm -- Quake III Arena Point Release

The next Point Release v116h has been released from id software. My position as the network admin for DFWLanParty is that I will test the patch with the server, and test multiplayer functionality and such to make sure it is as stable as the previous patch. If it has ANY bugs, we will be playing the previous patch (v113c). It never fails, there is always a patch released just in time to cause network havoc at a LAN party :)

I'm not saying I think every patch is bad of course, but if it causes problems that would affect a LAN party, then it is evil! Both the previous and the new patch will be available on the network if you don't have them when you arrive.

--Sharaz Jek

02.11.2K -- 1:37m -- Registration Update

Well, registration is definantly filling up at a brisk rate. If you are planning on showing up, you had better get your form in quick, as there are now 5 spots left! this LAN Party is gonna rock!!!

--Sharaz Jek

02.04.2K -- 1:00pm -- LAN Party Announcement

Ok, we have decided the date for the February Frag Fest, and it will be Saturday Feb. 26 at 12pm. As of now, we will begin taking registrations for the next event, so if you know someone who would like to come, put the word out!

--Sharaz Jek

01.13.2K -- 1:47pm -- More goodies added

There is now a page with screen shots of the last DFWLanParty up. Soon I will have a link on the side bar too, and I'm guessing I'll archive them in month to month format or something like that. :)

--Sharaz Jek

01.12.2K -- 1:30am -- Site Reset

The site has been reset to prepare for the next Frag Fest, so pages like calendar and attendees have been redone.

On another note, I finally beat Q3A on hardcore skill!!! It must have taken me about 100 tries, but i finally rocketed and railed 'ol Xaero to oblivion! Here is a link to a demo of me beating him, just in case no one belives me :)

--Sharaz Jek

01.11.2K -- 4:20pm -- Demos Available

I went throught the demos recorded, and picked out a few to post up here for downloading.

DFW01082Kq3dm4.dm3

DFW01082Kq3dm18.dm3

DFW01082Kq3dm19.dm3

PWvsVOID.dm3

You will probably have to right click the demos, and select "save target as", in my browser it will start opening up the code :) The 1st 3 demos were recorded by VoiD, and the 1v1 of Mr.Pussywiggle and VoiD was recorded by Quinton. Enjoy :)

--Sharaz Jek

01.10.2K -- 4:40pm -- D-Day +2

What a great frag fest that was! We had 18 PCs and the house was quite full, and that makes the largest LAN party I've ever hosted! The next one should be even larger, so everyone stay tuned.

The Network hardware ran as smoothly as I could have asked. There was one quick problem, but that was caused by a client PC leasing an IP address before one of the servers was reinstalled. Later when that server came back online, before that first client could release that IP address, another one leased the same IP address (the first PC was no longer in the data base of course) and we had the one and only problem that I felt accountable for :p And that one had a very quick and easy fix. FunkyMonkey was having some real chop problems with his PC, but we were able to fix that when we noticed that his NIC was a little out of date (the fact the the "100" light was not lit, and the extra token ring (pronounced "chokin ring") connector...and the date on the card when we pulled it out was stamped 1992). So we gave him a 10/100 out of the goodness of our hearts, and soon he was back to the unstoppable unbeatable FunkyMonkey we've all come to know and love. :)

The servers sit on a 10/100 full duplex switch, and all clients connect to 10/100 hubs. Network bandwidth usage never went above about 3-4%. The main game server, which was a dual Celeron 500/256sdram ran 3 Q3 servers and 2 Half-Life servers, and through most of the day there were players in each of them at any given time. CPU usage on the dual Celeron was about 20% the whole day. And that was running 5 servers! I'm sure that as DFWLanParty grows in size, we will grow into the bandwidth the servers have to offer nicely. The other server is a dual Xeon 400/196sdram, but it was barely 24 hours old, and only handled file server duties. It will likely handle UT servers in the future.

I really enjoyed meeting the new people, and killing them :) I hope everyone who attended will be up for future fests, they will only get better from here on out!

I'm going to post a few demos that were captured for your viewing pleasure in the next few days.

--Sharaz Jek

01.07.2K -- 8:05pm -- D-Day is Tomorrow!

Well, tomorrow is the day! I know im totally stoked! A few out of towners have started trickling in, so we will be fragging into the night and from the time we get up in the morning.

Last night, we built an AMD Athlon 650 machine, and it totally rocks! We were benching about 97FPS in Q3A timedemo in 32bit color! SMOKIN!!

Tomorrow, there will be people trickling in as early as 2pm, even tho the official setup time is set for 4pm. If you would like to head on over earlier, then come on out!

See you all tomorrow!!!

--Sharaz Jek

01.05.2K -- 1:07am -- Registration Closed

Registration is now closed, we have 18 people registered to show up on Saturday. It is definatly going to be a great day of LAN-ing! So, in the light that we are now no longer taking additional registrations, let me take a moment to go over a few last minute details:

1. There is a (small) possibility that there may be a shortage of table space. IF YOU OWN A CARD TABLE BRING IT!!! I will definatly have the seating problem taken care of, my job has donated the use of 15 chairs for us to sit on.

2. If you want to eat pizza at 9pm, then bring $5.

3. DO NOT bring alcohol or any thing that is illegal. We have a few attendees who are under 21, and we do not need the cops (unless they are off duty and brought their PC :p )

4. There will be Coke and possibly a few other assorted drinks in the fridge. If there is something you definatly want to be drinking, and there is a possibility that I might not have it (YES there is a possibility I might not have it, think about it, I cant read minds.... ) then you might want to bring your favorite drink.

5. Bring your power strip and 25' Ethernet cable! I will have power strips out, and you will plug into those, so you don't shut people down when you leave. If you have questions, ask where to plug in. If you happen to own a battery backup unit, then you may also want to bring that (many LAN parties either have tripped fuses, or someone trips on cables...) The Ethernet cable part I think is self explanatory :)

6. It is highly suggested you bring headphones. Generally, speakers at LAN parties disturb other players.

That about covers the basics, so we will all see you on Saturday!!! Email Sharaz Jek if you have any questions!

--Sharaz Jek

01.03.2K -- 1:27am -- Sound .pk3 Add-on

Here is a link to a file I added to my Q3CTF game, it is some sounds from LMCTF that are much less confusing as to who is stealing who's flag. I was a real big LMCTF fan, so that's the reason I like it, but I'm sure you will like it too. It will be on the FTP server at the LAN party, but its a small download, and worthwhile if you are a CTF-er.

--Sharaz Jek

01.01.2K -- 1:59am -- Site Updates

Well, the world did not end as many expected it to. So do we all know what that means??? Of Course! It means LAN PARTIES will not cease! Registration is almost full, there are 2 spots left, so if you know someone who is wanting to come, then tell them quick!

Basic site news today, updated the "Registered Attendees" page, and did some minor tweaks to stuff to make the site look a little better. The real kudos go out to Shrike, who designed all the awesome graphics and stuff you see on this site, including making the cool font for the DFWLanParty logo.

AND this is my very first attempt at HTML EVER! I have no idea how stuff works, I just clicked a few things here and there, and wow, it seemed to work. Don't know how, don't know why, but hey, it worked! But, as I mentioned before, Shrike created all that you see here, and I tried not to destroy it. :)

--Sharaz Jek

12.20.99 -- 9:00pm -- LAN Party Announcement

Major Announcement!!!

The first DFWLanParty is about to happen!

We are gonna rock all day into the night on a 10/100 megabit switched network baby! Game server is breathing fire thru twin 500MHz Celerons, so come out and put rail gun slugs in the heads of those you love! Space is limited, so sign up is gonna be done by per request basis, so send in an email to Sharaz Jek and let him know you are coming out to bring down the THUNDER!!!

Jan 8th 5pm

we'll start setting up at about 4pm, and we will rock till we drop! will be plenty of Q3A, UT, Halflife and most anything else to go around for everyone! table space is ever growing, and now we have space for 10 pcs... so if you think you will be after the 10th person to arrive, you better bring a card table... and it might not be a bad idea to bring your own chair no matter what... just to make sure you get to sit at that nice spot at a table you hurried over to get! you will all do well to email me and let me know who all is coming, and whether or not you are bringing extra fraggers (targets). also, one of the best ways to ensure you get your spot is to drop off the night before, or get there during setup time! if anyone needs directions to get here, email me and ill get them to you quick!

--Sharaz Jek

11.15.99 -- 2:00pm -- DFW LAN Party Site Opens

ITS ABOUT TO HIT THE FAN!!!

The DFWLANPartry headquarters web site is now open!!. Things are about to take off around here finally. Currently we're organizing the first party and searching for a suitable location that can accommodate our players and not leave us in debt. Of course, we ain't in this for the money, just for fun, but we don't wanna have any unnecessary expenses either. Anyhow, the regular LAN will definitely be in Dallas somewhere, so sit tight till we work out the details. In the meantime, its being held at the home of Sharaz Jek, Space is limited so pester him for details. More information below.
